Khalifa Aminu, a budding innovator based in Kano State, North West Nigeria, recently broke the internet with a showcase of an AI-driven smart glass he had developed, that enable blind individuals to navigate more securely and with greater independence.
In contrast to standard smart eyewear, the system combines artificial intelligence, sensors and GPS to recognise obstacles, identify objects and help wearers interpret their environment. According to reports, Aminu’s project focuses on practical assistance rather than entertainment, setting it apart from many consumer smart glasses.
The glasses also monitor the user’s position. Should the wearer become disoriented, the device can automatically share their location with a designated caregiver via WhatsApp or email.
Aminu says the idea grew from watching people in his community struggle with everyday navigation. He is also working on a version that adds voice interaction so the glasses can effectively “speak” to the user about their surroundings.
The technology is still being developed and has not been validated to replace a white cane, guide or other established mobility aids in all environments.
