Kenya has received a major boost in its ambition to become a leading creative economy after three of the world’s largest music companies—Sony Music, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group—committed to establishing a presence in Nairobi.
The commitment by the global record labels is being viewed as a significant endorsement of Kenya’s growing creative sector, reflecting confidence in the country’s artistic talent, ongoing policy reforms and efforts to position Nairobi as a regional hub for music production, publishing and distribution.
Beyond attracting international investment, the move is expected to create new opportunities for Kenyan artistes, producers, songwriters, publishers and music entrepreneurs by improving access to global markets, professional talent development, distribution networks and commercial partnerships.
The government’s focus will now shift towards implementing reforms aimed at creating a competitive and investor-friendly music ecosystem.
Key priorities include strengthening copyright protection, improving royalty collection and distribution, enhancing intellectual property enforcement and developing infrastructure that supports music production, live performances and digital content creation.
