Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have officially launched programming on TAFOUK TV, their joint AES television channel broadcasting from Bamako.
The television network is considered a key step toward shared media sovereignty for the West African group, and has been described in official communications as an instrument to counter disinformation and promote the region's narrative.
Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger formally withdrew from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in January 2025 following a yearlong process.

Beyond creating a new broadcaster, the initiative carries strong political symbolism. Leaders of the confederation say the channel represents a renewed effort to take ownership of information, deepen regional integration, and assert media sovereignty in the face of security, informational, and geopolitical pressures.
The launch underscores the AES vision of communicating “by ourselves, for ourselves,” as the bloc continues to consolidate its institutions and collective identity within the Sahel region.
