As Europe works to strengthen its electricity network, Africa is emerging as a key partner. Portugal and Morocco have revived plans for a long delayed electricity connection that could improve energy security and support the continent’s clean energy goals.
The renewed interest follows the major blackout that affected Spain and Portugal in 2025, exposing weaknesses in the region’s power grid. Portugal is now seeking an additional electricity link beyond Spain to improve resilience during future disruptions.
The proposed interconnection would allow electricity to flow between Portugal and Morocco, strengthening energy cooperation between Europe and Africa. The project is expected to seek European Union funding alongside private investment.
Morocco’s growing renewable energy capacity has positioned the country as an important energy partner for Europe, reinforcing Africa’s role in the global transition to cleaner and more reliable power.
