Rwanda and Cambodia have taken a significant step toward improving international financial connectivity following the launch of a new cross border payment cooperation initiative between their central banks.
The partnership, announced jointly by the National Bank of Rwanda and the National Bank of Cambodia, is designed to modernize payment systems and make electronic transactions between the two countries faster, more seamless, and more efficient. The announcement was made during the 28th Conference of Central Bank Governors of Francophone Countries held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
According to a joint statement, the initiative reflects the commitment of both countries to advancing digital financial services and strengthening cooperation through technological innovation. The agreement is expected to simplify cross border transactions for businesses, travelers, and citizens, while reducing barriers associated with international payments.
Officials noted that the cooperation will also contribute to stronger economic, trade, and tourism relations between Rwanda and Cambodia. By improving access to efficient electronic payment services, the two countries aim to support broader regional and international financial integration.

The initiative builds on a Memorandum of Understanding on Financial Sector Development Cooperation signed by the two central banks in 2023. The agreement established a framework for sharing knowledge, expertise, and best practices to support the growth and modernization of their respective financial sectors.
Financial analysts view the partnership as part of a growing global trend toward digital payment connectivity, where countries are increasingly leveraging technology to improve the speed, affordability, and accessibility of cross border transactions.
The move is expected to create new opportunities for trade and investment while enhancing financial inclusion for individuals and businesses in both nations.
