Uganda’s export numbers are rising.

Economy
Uganda’s export earnings continued to grow in July, with the country recording $1.40 billion from goods exports, up from $1.27 billion during the same period last year.

Gold remained the biggest contributor, generating $788 million in export earnings, a 35 percent increase from the previous year. But the growth was not limited to gold. Exports of maize, flowers, cocoa, beer and cement also increased during the period.

The wider figures show an even stronger trend. In the first 11 months of the financial year, Uganda earned $10.2 billion from exports, compared with $6.5 billion recorded during the same period a year earlier.
The figures point to growing activity across several parts of Uganda’s export economy, from agriculture and manufacturing to mineral exports.

For Uganda, the bigger question now is how this growth can translate into more production, stronger local industries and greater participation in global trade.

Uganda’s export numbers are rising. The next story is what the country does with that momentum.
