Morocco, South Africa and Mauritius Rank as Africa’s Highest Paying Countries for Nurses

Health
A new report on healthcare wages has revealed that Morocco, South Africa, and Mauritius offer the highest salaries for nurses in Africa, highlighting significant disparities in pay across the continent’s health sector.

According to the findings, nurses in these three countries earn substantially more than their counterparts in many other African nations, where low pay and difficult working conditions remain persistent challenges. The higher salaries are linked to stronger healthcare systems, greater government investment, and in some cases, a higher cost of living.

South Africa continues to lead the way, offering competitive wages to attract and retain skilled health professionals. Mauritius and Morocco follow closely, with both countries investing heavily in healthcare infrastructure and workforce development.
Analysts note that the pay gap across Africa has contributed to brain drain, as nurses from lower-paying countries often migrate in search of better opportunities abroad. Health experts say addressing wage disparities and improving working conditions will be critical in building resilient healthcare systems on the continent.

The report calls on African governments to prioritise healthcare investment, not only to raise pay for nurses but also to improve training, resources, and support for frontline workers who play a vital role in public health.
