President Ismail Omar Guelleh has officially inaugurated Al Shifa Hospital, a modern medical facility designed to strengthen the country’s health system and dramatically expand access to advanced care.

Spanning 32,000 square meters, the hospital was established over four years and features a 150-bed capacity (out of 220 total planned beds), with capability to treat more than 500 patients each day. The construction was fully financed by the National Social Security Fund (CNSS), underscoring Djibouti’s commitment to public health infrastructure.

Al Shifa is equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology and offers a broad range of specialised services, including cardiology, oncology, neurosurgery, nephrology, gynecology, urology, ENT, and ophthalmology. The hospital also features modern systems for patient monitoring, climate control, and fire safety, ensuring high standards of care.
In his remarks, President Guelleh highlighted how the hospital not only addresses the nation’s healthcare needs but also reduces the need for patients to travel abroad for specialized treatment. He noted that the facility’s advanced infrastructure positions Djibouti as a potential regional health hub, capable of providing high-quality medical services locally.

Health experts say this development marks a key milestone in Djibouti’s broader strategy to modernize its medical system, improve healthcare equity, and reduce dependency on external medical services. The hospital’s size and capacity are also likely to stimulate growth in related sectors, including medical training, health technology, and regional patient care.
