Ethiopia has recorded 376,615 foreign tourist arrivals during a recent 100-day period, according to government data released by the Ministry of Planning and Development. The surge in visitors is being attributed to relaxed visa policies, increased flight connectivity and the unveiling of new tourist destinations.

The government introduced several reforms aimed at boosting tourism. These include a reduced electronic tourist visa fee, an expanded e-visa issuance system and multiple incentives for regional and international carriers. Improved access to historic sites, nature reserves and cultural circuits also played a key role in attracting more international travelers.

Tourism officials say that Ethiopia’s long-term strategy now positions the country as a top destination in Africa for both leisure and business travel. The spike in arrivals is expected to fuel job creation in hospitality, transport and tour operations, while increasing foreign exchange earnings and supporting local entrepreneurship.
The government has outlined plans to invest further in infrastructure, including airports, road access to remote tourism sites, hotels and digital booking platforms to handle higher visitor volumes. These steps are part of Ethiopia’s broader economic diversification agenda, aiming to leverage its cultural and natural heritage to generate sustainable growth.

Analysts note that the rapid growth in tourism also links to the broader goal of enhancing infrastructure and innovation. The improvements in visa systems and online access reflect strides toward modernizing travel experiences and building resilient service infrastructure. This links to global development goals around promoting sustainable tourism and supporting economic development through private investment and technology.
