Nigeria has introduced a new digital broadcasting platform, FreeTV, offering Nigerians access to more than 100 television channels without monthly subscription fees.

The platform, launched as part of the country’s Digital Switch Over (DSO) initiative, is designed to expand access to digital television while improving viewing quality and supporting the growth of local content creators.

FreeTV provides access to a wide range of programming, including news, sports, entertainment, educational content, children’s programmes, and channels featuring Nigerian languages and regional content. The service combines satellite and internet based technology to deliver free to air television across the country.
The Federal Government stated that the platform aims to reduce barriers to television access and support digital inclusion by making quality broadcasting available to more households. Officials also highlighted opportunities for broadcasters, filmmakers, and creative professionals to reach larger audiences through the platform.

The launch marks a major step in Nigeria’s long running transition from analogue television broadcasting to digital broadcasting. The initiative is expected to improve signal quality, increase content options for viewers, and create new opportunities within the country’s media and entertainment industry.

With FreeTV, Nigeria joins the growing movement toward accessible digital television services, giving millions of viewers a new option for entertainment, information, and educational programming without traditional pay TV costs.
