Ethiopia Bets On Electric Vehicles To Cut Fuel Costs And Boost Sustainability

Technology
Ethiopia has taken a decisive step towards reshaping its transport sector, announcing a ban on the import of combustion engine vehicles in favour of electric cars.

The bold policy move is intended to address the country’s rising fuel import bill — estimated at around US$4.5 billion annually — while advancing its climate goals and reducing dependence on foreign currency outflows.
The new EV push promises multiple benefits. Beyond savings on fuel imports, it could reduce urban pollution, create new opportunities in the automotive value chain, and stimulate innovation in renewable energy and charging infrastructure.

Addis Ababa, the capital, is expected to be the first testing ground for the rollout.
