Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Unveils $30 Billion Infrastructure Projects

Leadership & Politics
Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has announced a bold infrastructural development plan worth $30 billion, aimed at transforming the country’s economy and strengthening its position as a regional hub in East Africa.

The projects, which will span the next decade, include major investments in transportation, energy, housing, and digital infrastructure. According to the Prime Minister, the initiative is designed to boost economic growth, create jobs, and enhance Ethiopia’s global competitiveness.

Among the key priorities are the expansion of Ethiopia’s national railway and road networks, the construction of modern housing units to address rapid urbanisation, and large-scale renewable energy projects. The government also intends to scale up digital infrastructure to support innovation, e-commerce, and access to services across the country.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described the $30 billion initiative as “a long-term investment in Ethiopia’s future,” stressing that infrastructure is the backbone of sustainable development. “These projects will not only stimulate growth but also unite our people by connecting regions, markets, and opportunities,” he said.

Funding is expected to come from a mix of government resources, public-private partnerships, and foreign investment. Analysts note that Ethiopia’s commitment to infrastructure development signals confidence in the country’s recovery following years of conflict and economic challenges.

The announcement has been welcomed by business leaders and regional observers, who believe the projects could position Ethiopia as a key gateway for trade and investment in Africa.
