Mali Arrests 55 Soldiers, Including Top Generals, Over Alleged Coup Plot

Leadership & Politics
Authorities in Mali have arrested 55 soldiers, including several high-ranking generals, for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government.

According to official sources in Bamako, the arrests followed weeks of intelligence operations that uncovered what officials described as a “serious threat” to national stability. The detained officers are accused of planning to destabilize the transitional administration led by Colonel Assimi Goïta, who himself came to power through a coup in 2021.

Government spokespersons said investigations are ongoing and pledged that all those implicated will face due process. The move underscores growing tensions within Mali’s military ranks at a time when the country is grappling with security challenges, political uncertainty and strained relations with international partners.
Observers note that this latest development could deepen divisions within the armed forces and complicate Mali’s transition back to democratic governance. The arrests also come amid rising concerns over extremist violence in the Sahel, with Mali seeking greater cooperation with neighboring countries and new allies such as Russia.

Human rights groups have urged the Malian authorities to ensure transparency and fairness in handling the case, warning that arbitrary detentions could fuel further instability.

For now, Mali’s leadership insists it remains firmly in control, describing the arrests as proof of its vigilance against any attempt to derail the country’s fragile political transition
