Zambia Unveils 100MW Solar Power Project

Energy
Zambia has marked a significant milestone in its energy diversification journey as President Hakainde Hichilema commissioned the 100-megawatt (MW) solar power plant in Chisamba district, Central Province.

Constructed with an investment of US$100 million (approximately K2.3 billion) by Power China International Group Limited, the state-of-the-art plant spans 106 hectares and houses 180,356 solar panels.

The facility is a major step in Zambia’s efforts to shift away from hydroelectric dependence, which has proven vulnerable to climate shocks such as prolonged droughts.
President Hichilema emphasised that the Chisamba project is part of a broader strategy to increase Zambia’s power generation capacity to 1,000 MW by year-end.

This shift toward clean and resilient energy solutions, he said, is central to building a stable, inclusive, and investment-ready economy.
