South African Rand Hits Highest Level Since 2022

Economy
The South African rand opened 2026 at its strongest level since 2022, buoyed by positive domestic trends, including ongoing economic reforms and rising metals prices, according to a Bloomberg report.

The currency climbed as much as 0.6% to 16.503 against the dollar, outperforming most emerging-market peers. The rand gained 14% in 2025, marking its best annual performance since 2009.
Gains in metals prices also supported the currency, while the South African Reserve Bank’s 3% inflation target has helped anchor expectations, boosting investor confidence in price stability.
