Kenya Turns to AI to Capture $8.6 billion lost to informal taxes

Economy
Kenya is turning to artificial intelligence to automate tax collection and curb massive losses in its informal economy.

Dr David Ndii, President Ruto’s chief economic advisor, says algorithms will soon replace human officers in tax enforcement.
The system will rely on Kenya’s digital finance platforms, such as M-Pesa, to identify and tax informal income streams.

If successful, the AI-driven model could become a blueprint for tax reform across Africa’s growing digital economies.
