Morocco Becomes Africa’s Leading Industrial Economy, Overtaking South Africa.

Economy
Morocco has officially become Africa’s leading industrial economy, moving ahead of South Africa in the African Development Bank’s 2025 Africa Industrialisation Index. The achievement marks the first time Morocco has claimed the top position since the index began tracking industrial performance across the continent.

According to the report, Morocco scored 0.8415 points, narrowly surpassing South Africa’s 0.8396. The African Development Bank attributed Morocco’s rise to years of industrial expansion, export diversification, and consistent government policies focused on manufacturing and economic transformation.

Over the past decade, Morocco has invested heavily in sectors such as automotive manufacturing, aerospace production, renewable energy, and phosphate processing. The country has attracted major international companies while building strong export links with markets in Europe, Africa, and beyond. Industry experts say these investments have helped transform Morocco into one of the continent’s most competitive manufacturing hubs.

South Africa remains one of Africa’s strongest industrial economies, with advanced manufacturing capabilities and a long-established industrial base. However, the African Development Bank noted that the country has experienced a gradual decline in industrial competitiveness over recent years, allowing Morocco to close the gap and eventually move ahead.
The report also highlights a broader shift taking place across Africa as countries increasingly focus on industrialisation as a pathway to economic growth, job creation, and reduced dependence on raw material exports. While progress remains uneven across the continent, nations investing in manufacturing and value-added production are beginning to strengthen their positions in global supply chains.

Economists say Morocco’s rise reflects the growing importance of long-term industrial planning, infrastructure investment, and export-driven growth strategies. The country’s success is increasingly being viewed as a model for how African economies can expand beyond commodity dependence and compete globally.

For Morocco, topping the continent’s industrial rankings is more than an economic milestone. It is a sign of how sustained investment, manufacturing growth, and strategic planning are helping reshape Africa’s industrial future.
