When your name tells a story of continents colliding and history uniting — meet New York City's Mayor-elect Zohran Kwame Mamdani. His middle name wasn’t random: it’s homage.

Still basking in the euphoria of his hard-won election victory, Zohran Mandani is not shying away from identifying with his strong African roots - at least not yet!

He recently revealed that his grandfather gave him his middle name Kwame in honour of Ghana's first Prime Minister Kwame Nkrumah.
The name 'Kwame' traces back to the Akan people of Ghana. In Akan culture, children are traditionally named after the day of the week they were born.

Kwame means “born on Saturday” and carries more than just a timestamp, it symbolizes identity, ancestry, and a link to community.

Born in Kampala Uganda some 34 years ago, Zohran moved to New York City at age 7 with his family. His mother and father, both of Indian descent, lived in Uganda until they were expelled by Idi Amin in 1972.
