Coffee produced in Tanzania has secured a leading position across Africa and earned a top global standing, according to the latest results from the 22nd African Fine Coffees Association (AFCA) Conference and Exhibition held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Tanzanian delegation announced that Tanzania now ranks first in Africa and fourth worldwide for the production of high-quality certified coffee.

Officials from the Tanzania Coffee Board confirmed the achievement, citing a report by the Intercontinental Coffee Exchange presented at the three-day event. The ranking places Tanzania behind coffee giants Brazil, Peru and Mexico, but ahead of other major producing nations due to its emphasis on quality and environmentally sustainable farming methods.

The recognition reflects intensified efforts across the coffee value chain to improve farming practices from planting through harvesting. Tanzania also made a notable showing in specialty categories at the AFCA exhibition. Coffee from Finagro Plantation in Arusha placed second in the Experimental Arabica category, while beans from the Mara Coffee Farmers’ Cooperative Society earned third in the washed Arabica segment.
Tanzania’s participation extended beyond quality rankings. For the first time, Tanzanian baristas competed internationally in the AFCA barista competition, with two representatives advancing to the top eight among contestants from 25 coffee-producing countries.

Coffee production has also expanded significantly. Officials reported that output rose from 50,000 tonnes to 100,000 tonnes, marking a substantial step forward for the industry. With European markets nearing saturation, authorities said they are pursuing new export opportunities in the Middle East, China and other regions to broaden global reach.

Industry leaders say the milestone underscores the potential of Tanzanian coffee on the global stage and highlights the value of sustainable agricultural practices in enhancing both quality and market competitiveness.
